CALL-LEADER STAFF REPORT
As expected, Alexandria High School’s wrestlers ruled Saturday’s season-opening
Elwood Super Six and a pair of Elwood seniors led the Panthers’ performances.
“Yes, it went pretty much as I expected,” said Elwood Coach Fred Short, whose
Panthers opened the day with a 65-9 victory over Indianapolis Attucks before
dropping matches to Eastbrook, Greenfield, Blackford and Alexandria.
Trailing 5-0 Alexandria were 4-1 Greenfield, 3-2 Eastbrook, 2-3 Blackford, 1-4
Elwood and 0-5 Indianapolis Attucks.
“I thought Alexandria would be pretty good this season, and I was hoping to win
one or two matches, so it went pretty much like we expected it to go,” said
Short.
Alexandria Coach Jack Grimaldi was understandably excited by his team’s
performance.
“The kids have been working hard, and today it showed,” said Grimaldi. “I’m
pleased with how they performed, especially considering where we were the last
couple of years. They are much farther along technique-wise, and we are more
able to focus on advanced things and more solid drilling.”
Led by 5-0 Tanner Boyland at 125 pounds and 4-1 Zach Long at 140, Elwood was
competitive with its three Central Indiana Conference rivals.
Eastbrook beat Elwood 48-34, Blackford won 48-30 and Alexandria outpointed the
Panthers 54-21.
Greenfield, whose only loss on the day was to Alexandria, 37-28, topped Elwood
60-12.
“Tanner Boyland really wrestled well, beat the Alex kid in overtime to finish
5-0,” said Short. “And Zach Long, his only loss came in the final round to the
Alexandria kid.”
Boyland had pins in his first three matches — in 3:03, 1:16, 4:26 — then
accepted a forfeit against Blackford.
In the final round against Alexandria sophomore Chandler Sells, Boyland got a
takedown in overtime for a 7-5 victory.
Long had pins in 1:53, 2:27, 2:53 and 50 seconds before meeting Alexandria’s Jon
Blanton, who decisioned Long 4-0.
Blanton was voted one of the event’s two Most Outstanding Wrestlers. The other
was Eastbrook 145-pounder Brady Hovermale.
Also for the Panthers, Kivan Faulstich and Brandon Hoel both went 3-2 and going
2-3 was Preston Collier.
Hoel had a pin and two decisions, while Faulstich pinned two rivals and accepted
a forfeit.
Collier pinned both of his victims.
Elwood will entertain Frankton on Tuesday, Dec. 1.
